That’s Why I Run: Team World Vision- Clean Water for Children in Africa

I run…because learning about global poverty isn’t enough. In college, I minored in African Studies and chose Swahili as my foreign language, and while that raised my “awareness,” learning about East Africa will never save a single life if it doesn’t pay off in action. I have never been in want for water a single day in my life. Kids in Kenya are dying of diarrhea — one child every 15 seconds dies from a water-related illness. What good is the Gospel if, having received it, I never act? Team World Vision is my opportunity to help save lives in Africa. That’s why I run.

Film Review of Deepwater Horizon

deep-water-poster

Deepwater Horizon is a true story filled with the greed of the oil business and how it leads to  tragedy.   Yet in the midst of tragedy there are heroic true stories.   It features Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell and John Malkovich.   And the trio all put in fine performances.   I was especially drawn to John Malkovich performance.   Honestly, it was lost on me until this moment that father and daughter  were in this film, Kate Hudson and stepdad Kurt Russell.   Kate has a quiet supporting role.  Find out  a bit more about this film by watching the review below.

The Lake House – LA- Is Not Just Par for the Course Dining

Evchef-geore-and-chef-pauler had a meal so good you had to meet the chefs, I just did. The Lake House – LA – Nice to meet you Chefs George and Chef Paul.   This is not an obvious choice for dining as it is situated at Woodley Lakes Golf course but if you are golf,  work up an appetite  then crave a meal, you won’t be disappointed with this restaurant.   Check their schedule of Facebook for hours and events because even if you don’t golf, this restaurant is worth the trip.   Eat indoors or outdoors.   I dined outdoors and found it soothing to look out over the golf course as I sat at the nicely shellacked and rustic picnic table.

pulled-pork-sandwich

This was an inadvertent dining selection.  After walking four miles on the golf course, we were famished.  I wasn’t expecting much more than to extinguish my hunger.  Yet, quite the contrary happened.  I  took two bites of an incredible pulled pork sandwich brimming smoked flavor, my taste-buds totally impressed.  I offered a bite to my dining companion.  I could tell by his facial expression which spoke before he did that he had just eaten something more than ordinary.  He instantly mentioned how good it was.   I once review a bbq place where the made a simple statement, “If it is good you will not need sauce.”   If you ask for the sauce, it’s a crutch or habit because the flavor of this sandwich stands on its own.  You don’t need sauce.  Chef Paul knows a thing or two about BBQ.  It is a passion of his.  If you come to visit his restaurant, he confidently suggests that you try the tri-tip.   Now, I learned this after having no more room in my stomach to eat but I did devour the delicious pulled pork sandwich.

Layaway Plans for Air Travel?

airforable2

When most people think about layaway plans, they usually think of toys and clothing for the holiday season. In comes Airfordable, a Chicago based tech startup that allows users to pay for airline tickets in installments. It’s easy. Travelers must submit a screenshot of an itinerary along with the trip details; and then Airfordable presents a payment plan. After making an initial deposit, regular payments can be made on the overall balance through the date of departure.  Read More

Film and Foodie Review: The Accountant

ben-affleck-first-look-at-the-accountant-social

Don’t believe the critical bad hype about “The Accountant”,  go with the audience reaction which is very positive.   Although, the movie is evidently flawed in some areas like contrived coincidence.   The second plot point twist toward the ending is way too verbally expository rather than executed ins .   Despite these two factors.  I would lean to what is positive more than what is negative.

For those excited about the pairing of JK Simmons and Ben Affleck together in this film, you really will not get to see them play opposite each other.   If you don’t know, these will play opposite each other Ben Affleck’s version of Batman and JK Simmons will play Commissioner Gordan.    As for Anna Kendrick, she is likeable.  I was concerned about the age difference but Affleck looks rather young in this film contrary to the mature slightly grey look he has been celebrating in other films.
