Mardi Gras Indians are black carnival revelers in New Orleans, Louisiana, who dress up for Mardi Gras in suits influenced by Native American ceremonial apparel. Collectively, their organizations are called “tribes”. There are about 38 tribes which range in size from half a dozen to several dozen members.
Stories of people of color have been overlooked for years; moreover, showcasing romance or romantic leads of color opposite someone white were perceived as taboo. When Hollywood broached the interracial topic, white people were cast to play people of color such as in Love Is a Many Splendored Thing and West Side Story. Both admittedly, great films worth watching but missed opportunities in the casting department therefore are not on the list. One film which bucked the trend, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? It stunned audiences back in 1967 making inroads slowly as to people of color as romantic leads.
Hollywood remained slow in producing romances featuring people of color on the silver screen. Five, six, seven, eight, pick what you appreciate. I concocted this recipe when having a party. It was after the New Year’s and in African American culture, it means you may have leftover black-eyed peas. I knew we had tortilla chips. I knew we just happened to have sliced black pitted olives. So I asked someone to pick up some sour cream and shredded cheddar cheese. Now, in classic version of the famous 7 layer dip people include tomatoes, guacamole and green onions. If any of these layer turn you off then leave it out. You dip might turn out to be four, five or six layer dip. If you’r not into refried beans and you want you want to add something fun and different to your New Year’s eve or Juneteenth celebration.
