Dave Miller: How did you get into doing Mezcal?

Cecilia:  Well um, kind of a long story but just to put it short… It was a trip that I took to Oaxaca about four or five years ago and the it was the first time I was there taking in the culture, taking in the people and the taste of Mezcal.  It occurred to me that people in Mexico were not appreciating it as they should so I started going back to Oaxaca and learning about Mezcal.  It is very extensive.  And then I started writing about it.  And that’s how the blog started and people started calling me la nina del Mezcal.  (Watch Interview for more)

Downtown Los Angeles: 5th Annual Taste of Mexico

The Taste of Mexico’s signature event takes place under the stars with extensive food tastings, tequila tent, mezcaleria installation by Mezcal Legendario Domingo making its U.S. debut, Ilegal Mezcal, Mezcal Los Javis, Mezcal El Silencio, michelada beer garden by Victoria Beer and Guelaguetza’s Miche Mobil, and live entertainment by A Poco No!, Jarocho Group Tenocelomeh and Metralleta de Oro DJ Collective.

New Highlights from this year’s Taste of Mexico will include: Pettycash, Guerrilla Tacos, Colonia Publica, Corazón y Miel’s Bar extraordinaire Robin Chopra, Aqui es Texcoco, Taco Libre, Chichen Itzá, Día de Los Puercos Food Truck, Gabbi’s Mexican Kitchen and Cocina Condesa (full restaurant lineup below).

Regional food from LA favorites Guelaguetza, La Casita Mexicana, Mexicano, Frida, Frida Tacos, Lotería Grill, Torta Co., Mexicali Taco & Co., Casa Oaxaca, Tortas Bravas, Candela Taco Bar, Yuca’s, Tacos Punta Cabras, Mercado, Yxta and more…

Mariscos from Ceviche Project, Coni’Seafood, El Coraloense, Pez Cantina and Mariscos El Faro Food Truck.

Sweet Additions include La Monarca Bakery, Artesana Ice Pops, Mr. Churro, Frijolitos Mobile Coffee Cart and freshly spun cotton candy made with tamarind, mango and chocolate flavors by Love Swirls Cotton Candy. The Evolution of Taste of Mexico in Los Angeles

Now in it’s 4th year, the Taste of Mexico festival has expanded not only in size but become a day and night event.  This year was the launch of the Farmer’s Market Picnic.  People brought their blankets and relaxed under umbrellas.  If you have never been attended then look for unlimited food and drink sampling.  The night time event uses twice as much room as day but with the successful launch of the day maybe it will be bigger next year.

I love this event but having gone since the first year it does seem that a bit of the vision has been comprised “to show that Mexico cuisine is more than tacos.”  Now with multiple restaurants involved rather than the founding four (La Casita Mexicana, Frida, La Monarca and Guelaguetza), the shift has gone tacos.   High volumes of people require quick and easy food to sample.  The size of this event has easily quadrupled in four years.  And even though, there is a plethora of tacos being offered,  in many cases chefs are raising the bar on what is a taco.   There are unique offerings like quail, octupus and more.  Historically, La Monarca normally takes center stage as the providers of desserts; however, his year they made room for Compañía de Café.    Media sources like the LA Times and more are raving about this new establishment.  Now contributor Dave Miller(Dave Miller’s Mexico blog) and I disagreed on our thoughts in relation to this cafe and its offerings.  Dave is more traditional and authentic whereas I appreciated and enjoyed the fusion like Mole poundcake.  Hibicusus coffee and tamarind coffee drinks.   See MCCN Interview Below.

Taste of Mexico 2013

The Taste of Mexico Association is honored to announce that the Ambassador of Mexico in Washington DC, Eduardo Medina Mora, accompanied with Supervisor Gloria Molina, Councilman Jose Huizar and the Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles, Carlos Sada, will be officially inaugurating The Taste of Mexico’s 3rd Annual Food Event at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes.In its third year, The Taste of Mexico has partnered with LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes on Hispanic Heritage Month to bring together top restaurants like La Casita Mexicana, Guelaguetza, La Monarca Bakery and Frida plus 25 of the top Mexican restaurants in the city for a south-of-the-border feast.
